Carbon Dynamics in Rewetted Tropical Peat Swamp Forests

چکیده

Degraded and drained peat swamp forests (PSFs) are major sources of carbon emissions in the forestry sector. Rewetting interventions aim to reduce loss enhance stock. However, studies rewetting tropical PSFs still limited. This study examined effect on dynamics at a rewetted site an undrained site. We measured aboveground (AGC), belowground (BGC), litterfall, heterotrophic components soil respiration (Rh), methane (CH4), dissolved organic (DOC) concentration both sites. found that total stock was slightly lower than (1886.73 ± 87.69 2106.23 214.33 Mg C ha−1, respectively). The (SOC) 1685 61 ha−1 1912 190 sites, respectively, from litterfall 4.68 0.30 3.92 0.34 year−1, respectively. annual average Rh 4.06 0.02 year−1 3.96 0.16 In contrast, CH4 were −0.0015 0.00 0.056 0.000 condition, litter may become stable over longer period. Consequently, gain mainly depend magnitude decomposition (Rh) emissions.

Recycling of phenolic compounds in Borneo’s tropical peat swamp forests

BACKGROUND Tropical peat swamp forests (TPSF) are globally significant carbon stores, sequestering carbon mainly as phenolic polymers and phenolic compounds (particularly as lignin and its derivatives) in peat layers, in plants, and in the acidic blackwaters. Previous studies show that TPSF plants have particularly high levels of phenolic compounds which inhibit the decomposition of organic mat...

Long-term disturbance dynamics and resilience of tropical peat swamp forests

1. The coastal peat swamp forests of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, are undergoing rapid conversion, predominantly into oil palm plantations. This wetland ecosystem is assumed to have experienced insignificant disturbance in the past, persisting under a single ecologically-stable regime. However, there is limited knowledge of the past disturbance regime, long-term functioning and fundamentally the ...

Quantifying Dynamics in Tropical Peat Swamp Forest Biomass with Multi-Temporal LiDAR Datasets

Tropical peat swamp forests in Indonesia store huge amounts of carbon and are responsible for enormous carbon emissions every year due to forest degradation and deforestation. These forest areas are in the focus of REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation, forest degradation, and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks) projects, w...

Overcoming Limitations with Landsat Imagery for Mapping of Peat Swamp Forests in Sundaland

Landsat can be used to map tropical forest cover at 15–60 m resolution, which is helpful for detecting small but important perturbations in increasingly fragmented forests. However, among the remaining Landsat satellites, Landsat-5 no longer has global coverage and, since 2003, a mechanical fault in the Scan-Line Corrector (SLC-Off) of the Landsat-7 satellite resulted in a 22–25% data loss in e...

Effects of Fires on Peat Swamp and Lowland Dipterocarp Forests in Kalimantan, Indonesia

The effects of the fires that burned over 4.7 million ha of Indonesia’s tropical forests during 1997 and 1998 are largely unknown. We assess the immediate impacts of these fires on five forest areas representing several different habitats in Kalimantan 1-2 months after the fires went out. Comparisons of transects in burned and unburned forest areas were conducted at three sites: Tanjung Puting ...
